IBM Part 4481480 is the internal OEM part number for the legendary Intel 8088 Microprocessor. It was custom-branded, remarked, or licensed for production by IBM Microelectronics.Thorough DescriptionThis component is a 16-bit internal, 8-bit external microprocessor housed in a 40-pin Dual In-line Package (DIP). Running at a clock speed of 4.77 MHz, it features an 8-bit data bus that allowed IBM to use cheaper, widely available 8-bit support chips, significantly lowering the production costs of early personal computers.Real-Life ApplicationThis specific chip served as the literal Central Processing Unit (CPU) for the computers that ignited the personal computing revolution:IBM PC (Model 5150): The original, historic IBM Personal Computer introduced in 1981.IBM PC/XT (Model 5160): The wildly popular successor introduced in 1983, which added a built-in hard drive. When opening a vintage IBM 5150 or 5160 motherboard, you will find this chip sitting in the main CPU socket (typically labeled U3). While many of these systems shipped with generic Intel or AMD-branded 8088 chips, IBM utilized its own fabrications stamped with "IBM 4481480" on the top casing for standard parts replacement and early manufacturing runs.
