American Oi! is a subgenre of punk rock that emerged in the United States in the 1980s, drawing inspiration from the British Oi! movement which sprang to life in the late 1970s. It is characterized by its raw, street-level ethos, with a sound that combines the aggressive energy of punk with the anthemic, sing-along choruses of traditional working-class rock. The lyrical subjects often revolve around themes of camaraderie, class struggle, and the experiences of the common person, while maintaining a rebellious and sometimes politically charged tone. Bands like The Bruisers and Anti-Heros were instrumental in shaping the American Oi! sound, which is typified by straightforward, catchy riffs, a strong backbeat, and a direct, no-frills approach to musical composition and production, fostering a sense of unity and defiance among its dedicated fan base.
