Atomic Broccoli macroalgae is a branching red ornamental with a distinctive iridescent sparkle. It adds color and texture while taking up nitrate and phosphate as it grows. The sparkle is easiest to see under white or daylight-spectrum light, making this Reef Genetics culture a strong choice for a refugium viewing chamber or a macroalgae display. Atomic Broccoli macroalgae quick care facts Scientific name Red macroalgae sold under the Atomic Broccoli trade name Algae group Red ornamental macroalgae Care level Easy Light High, white or full spectrum Water flow Moderate to high Growth rate Moderate Best placement Refugium or protected display-tank accent Nutrient export Moderate; harvest growth to remove stored nutrients Food value May be grazed by tangs, rabbitfish, and other herbivores Portion Golf Ball or Soft Ball; natural shape and color vary Why keep Atomic Broccoli macroalgae? Uses nitrate and phosphate to build new tissue, providing measurable nutrient export when harvested. Shows red branching growth with shimmering highlights under white-spectrum light. Creates shelter for copepods, amphipods, and other beneficial microfauna. Stays in manageable clumps that can be tumbled or secured in a protected display area. Lighting, flow, and nutrients Use a bright white or full-spectrum refugium light such as the Illumagic Pixel Refugium Light. Moderate-to-strong flow should move water through the branches without pinning the portion against a wall. A gentle tumble exposes every side and prevents detritus from collecting. Keep nitrate and phosphate measurable; if growth stalls while nutrients remain available, verify light intensity and consider testing iron before dosing a trace supplement. Refugium or display tank? A refugium is the easiest placement because the portion can tumble and stay away from grazing fish. In a display, wedge it gently into protected rockwork where it receives broad flow and white light. Tangs and rabbitfish may treat it as food, so keep a backup culture outside the display when those fish are present. Harvesting and pruning Remove roughly one-third of the mass when branches begin shading each other. Harvesting is what exports the nutrients held in the algae. Keep the healthiest, brightest center of the culture and discard pale or damaged tissue rather than returning it to the system. Troubleshooting Atomic Broccoli macroalgae Brown detritus in the branches points to weak or poorly directed flow. Faded color can follow a sudden increase in light, zero nitrate or phosphate, or unstable salinity. Move a newly received portion farther from the light for several days, then increase intensity gradually. This is a natural product, so shape, size, and shade vary between portions. How Atomic Broccoli macroalgae compares Choose Atomic Broccoli for unusual branching texture and sparkle. Dragon's Breath grows faster and shows broader red-orange blades, while Blue Hypnea is slower and more blue-violet. For maximum nutrient export rather than display color, use Chaeto in the refugium. Portion sizes, shipping, and acclimation Choose a Golf Ball starter portion or a larger Soft Ball portion. Each is a natural cutting, so no two pieces look identical. Float the sealed bag to match temperature, then rinse the algae in discarded tank water, inspect it, and begin it under reduced light. Do not pour shipping water into the aquarium. Pairs well with Illumagic Pixel Refugium Light for a bright full spectrum, Live Mixed Copepods to seed the refuge, and Salifert Nitrate Test Kit plus Salifert Phosphate Test Kit to keep nutrients in a useful range.
