These two components work together: the drum belt wraps around the drum and motor pulley to transmit rotation and keep the drum tumbling, while the idler pulley rides against the belt to maintain proper tension so it doesn't slip or sag during operation. Over time, the belt wears, cracks, or glazes over, and the idler pulley's bearing wears out, causing it to spin roughly or seize. Because these two parts work together in the same drive path and tend to wear on a similar timeline, they're commonly sold and replaced as a set. Symptoms of failure include the dryer not starting, the drum not tumbling or spinning, and noise issues such as squealing or grinding during operation. It directly replaces 6602-001655, 6602-001314, 5PH2337, EXP645, PD00002012, EAP2407938, AP4373659, PS4133825 (drum belt), and DC93-00634A, DC97-07509B, DC61-01230B, DC96-00882B, DC96-00882C, 4455850, PD00032419, EAP11771601, AP6038887, and PS11771601 (idler pulley). Quick Answer The EXP653 Dryer Idler Pulley and Belt Set fixes Samsung, Kenmore, Amana, and Maytag electric dryers that won't start, won't tumble or spin, or make squealing/grinding noise during operation. Includes drum belt and idler pulley. These two parts wear together — replacing both at once, rather than just the one that failed, helps avoid reopening the dryer again soon after. Wear work gloves. Remove the top and front panels of the dryer to access the drum, belt, and idler pulley. Remove the old drum belt from around the drum and motor pulley. Remove the old idler pulley from its mounting bracket. Install the new EXP653 idler pulley in the same position, making sure it spins freely by hand before continuing. Route and install the new drum belt correctly around the drum and motor pulley, matching the original path exactly, and re-tension it through the idler pulley. Reinstall the drum if it was removed, then reassemble the front and top panels. Restore power and run a test cycle to confirm quiet, smooth operation with the drum tumbling normally and no squealing or grinding noise. Tools needed: 1/4" nut driver, Phillips screwdriver, work gloves. Frequently Asked Questions My dryer won't start. Could that really be the belt or pulley? Yes, on some models a broken belt or seized idler pulley can prevent the dryer from starting a cycle at all, since certain safety switches rely on normal drum movement or belt tension to allow the cycle to proceed. If your dryer hums or clicks but won't fully start, or starts and immediately stops, this set is worth checking alongside more obvious suspects like the door switch. Do I need to replace both the belt and the pulley, or just the one that failed? You can replace just the failed component if you've confirmed which one is actually bad, but these two parts share the same drive path and tend to wear out around the same time — a seized pulley can accelerate belt wear, and a worn belt puts extra strain on the pulley. Replacing both together, since you'll already have the dryer open, helps avoid a second teardown soon after. My dryer squeals during operation. Is that this set? Yes, squealing or grinding noise is one of the most common symptoms addressed by this belt and pulley set, typically caused by a worn idler pulley bearing or a belt that's slipping due to lost tension. Is this an OEM or aftermarket part? This is an aftermarket replacement set built to OEM-equivalent quality standards. It is not a genuine Samsung OEM part, but is manufactured to match the belt length, rib pattern, and pulley design of the original 6602-001655 belt and DC93-00634A idler pulley used in compatible Samsung, Kenmore, Amana, and Maytag electric dryers.
