Citrullus lanatus. A mix of watermelon shapes and sizes originally collected from a farmer at San Felipe Pueblo in 1996. Our partner farmer who grew these says they have a really g ood, sweet flavor, though they are somewhat variable in taste. Shapes vary from round to oblong with pale pink, red, and yellow flesh. Thick rinds make them good keepers. Most of the melons with dark green skin have red flesh, while most of those with light green skin have yellow or peach flesh. Seeds also vary in size and color: the small brown seeds mostly produce dark green melons with red flesh; the small black seeds mostly produce pale winter melons with pink flesh; the large tan seeds or large brown/black mottled seeds mostly produce pale melons with yellow flesh.
