Hackberry is a resilient canopy tree valued for its exceptional adaptability and significant contribution to local biodiversity. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, providing a cost-effective way to introduce long-lived genetics into larger restoration projects or landscape plantings. When planted correctly before top growth begins, these trees establish strong root systems capable of supporting vigorous development in the growing season. Celtis occidentalis is distinct for its unique bark, which develops deep, canyon-like ridges as the tree matures. This species serves as a critical host for the larvae of the Hackberry Emperor, Mourning Cloak, Question Mark, and American Snout butterflies, while also supporting hundreds of other moth species. In addition to its ecological role as a host plant, it produces a nutritious drupe-like fruit with a nutty seed that is consumed by both wildlife and humans. This tree is well-suited for riparian buffers, windbreaks, and difficult sites where other species might struggle. It thrives in full sun and can establish in a variety of soil conditions, demonstrating remarkable tolerance for both flooding and drought. Hardy in zones 3–9, Hackberry grows to a mature height and spread of approximately 50 feet, making it a substantial addition to open landscapes. Choosing bareroot stock ensures that you are starting with hardy, dormant plants ready to adapt to your specific site conditions. Once established, Hackberry provides enduring value through its climate resilience and wildlife support. We recommend installing these trees in a well-prepared site to maximize their long-term performance and ecological impact.
