Quick Product Summary The Hohner Special 20 Harmonica in C is a smooth-playing 10-hole diatonic harmonica designed to deliver a warm, expressive tone with excellent comfort and response. Its innovative recessed reed plate design creates a projecting ABS mouthpiece with no exposed reed plate edges, making the Special 20 particularly comfortable for extended playing sessions. With 20 brass reeds, Richter tuning and a durable black ABS comb, the Special 20 is equally at home with beginners learning their first melodies and experienced players performing blues, folk, country, rock and pop. The key of C also makes this one of the most practical choices for learning, with a huge amount of harmonica tuition based around C major. The Hohner Special 20 became particularly influential because of its recessed reed plate construction. Instead of leaving the edges of the reed plates exposed at the mouthpiece, they sit within the ABS comb to create a smooth projecting mouthpiece. This makes the harmonica particularly comfortable against the lips while retaining the responsiveness players expect from a professional-quality diatonic instrument. Its 20 brass reeds and specially designed stainless-steel covers produce a characterful, warm sound suited to everything from clean melodies and chords to expressive blues bends. Combined with a moisture-resistant ABS comb and screw-based construction, the Special 20 offers an excellent balance of traditional harmonica tone, practical durability and player-friendly design. Who Is It For? The Special 20 in C is an excellent first serious harmonica for beginners, while offering enough response and expression for experienced and professional players. Its comfortable mouthpiece makes it particularly appealing to players who find traditional exposed reed plate designs less comfortable, while its responsive reeds lend themselves well to developing techniques such as single-note playing, bending, vibrato and expressive blues phrasing. The key of C is especially useful for new players because it is widely used in harmonica tuition and learning material. Why Choose a Diatonic Harmonica in C? A 10-hole diatonic harmonica in C is one of the most popular starting points for learning harmonica. The instrument is compact and straightforward to begin playing, yet offers considerable expressive potential as your technique develops. C sits comfortably within the standard harmonica range and is widely used in books, online lessons and tuition material. Once basic techniques have been mastered, the same playing principles can be transferred to Special 20 harmonicas in other keys. For blues players using second-position or cross-harp technique, a C harmonica is commonly used when playing in G. Comfortable Recessed Reed Plates One of the defining features of the Special 20 is its recessed reed plate design. The brass reed plates sit within the ABS comb rather than extending to the outer edge of the mouthpiece. This creates a smoother playing surface and helps make the Special 20 particularly comfortable when moving quickly between holes or playing for longer periods. Durable ABS Comb The black ABS comb is resistant to moisture and changing environmental conditions, providing consistent performance without the potential swelling associated with traditional untreated wooden combs. This makes the Special 20 an especially practical choice for regular practice, rehearsals, live performance and travelling musicians. Warm, Responsive Tone The Special 20 uses 20 brass reeds mounted on 0.9 mm brass reed plates, providing a responsive feel that reacts naturally to changes in breath pressure and articulation. Its stainless-steel cover plates incorporate a relatively small rear opening designed to contribute to the Special 20's characteristically warm tonal response. What's Included?
