Product Overview Ultum Nature Systems Controbase delivers a porous pumice base substrate engineered to nourish heavy root-feeding species and eliminate anaerobic dead zones beneath planted tank substrate layouts. Laying down this foundational layer prevents root suffocation and stops expensive stem plants from stalling out over time. Packed with slow-releasing Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus, and trace minerals, these porous 6–8mm pumice granules actively drive water circulation, promote oxygen exchange, and build massive beneficial bacteria colonies. Pre-packaged in reusable mesh filter bags, Controbase lets you stack and sculpt dramatic aquascaping slopes before capping the base with your primary layer of aquarium soil, sand, or gravel. Key Features & Benefits Porous pumice granule composition enhances subsurface water circulation and prevents anaerobic soil compaction. Infused base nutrients deliver steady Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus, and trace minerals directly to root zones. Pre-filled mesh filter bags allow clean installation, easy removal, and simple stacking to build substrate elevation. High microporosity provides expansive surface area for beneficial bacteria colonization to strengthen biological filtration. Usage & Application Guidelines Do not wash or rinse Controbase mesh bags before placement. Place the mesh bags as is into the bottom of the empty tank, keeping them away from the front viewing glass. Stack additional bags toward the rear corners to easily sculpt dramatic sloping hills and hardscape elevation. Cover completely with a minimum of two inches of aquarium soil, sand, or gravel to prevent clouding and lock in nutrients. Pair with active aquarium soil for heavily planted setups or cosmetic sand for low-demand, light-planting layouts. Quick Facts & Specifications Listed information should be treated as general guidelines only. Team Buce Plant encourages you to do thorough research to ensure healthy growth! Nutrients embedded in pumice granules typically feed root zones for approximately three months before routine fertilization takes over. Do I need to rinse this aquarium substrate before adding it to my tank? No, you should never wash or open the Controbase mesh bags. Place the mesh bags directly onto the bottom glass as they come out of the package; washing will rinse away essential infused nutrients and disturb the microbial carrier. 2. How much substrate do I need for my aquarium size? For standard base coverage up to 20 gallons, a single 2-liter bag containing 4 mesh pouches is sufficient. For larger displays up to 114 gallons, the 8-liter option with 16 pouches provides enough volume to build base slopes across the entire footprint. 3. How does this substrate affect my water parameters? UNS Controbase slowly releases Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus directly into the root zone while remaining safely capped beneath your primary substrate bed. When covered properly with at least 2 inches of soil or sand, it prevents parameter spikes in the open water column. 4. Can I combine UNS Controbase with aquarium sand in the same aquascape? Yes, combining Controbase with decorative aquarium sand is an ideal strategy for low-maintenance or cosmetic setups. It allows you to build substrate height and supply root-zone oxygenation without exposing raw soil along the front glass edge.
