Colonel Russell W. Volckmann, a West Point graduate serving as senior American instructor to the 11th Infantry Regiment when war broke out, refused to surrender when Bataan fell an d escaped into the mountains of northern Luzon. There he built a scattered underground into the USAFIP-NL, a guerrilla force that grew from four men to more than 20,000 Filipino and American fighters, aided by Igorot and Ifugao allies, that eventually fought as an organized army alongside MacArthur's returning forces. Volckmann titled the book for the guerrillas' answer to MacArthur's famous promise, and W. W. Norton & Company published it in 1954. Show more
